@font-face is here. More accurately, it’s been here for years in various browsers with varying degrees of support. Internet Explorer 6 was the first major standards-based browser to support @font-face way back in 2001.
So what was the hold up? Browser support, licensing, and format disagreements all contributed. Thankfully as of last year that’s all behind us (more or less depending on who you ask).
Now that broad browser support is available, all that’s left to you is to find fonts up to the task for your PSD to HTML projects. TypeKit, Fonts.com, etc all provide a nice 3rd party service for delivering fonts from the major foundries – we even use Fonts.com service here on HTMLRockstars. The Google Font API provides a solid delivery system for a number of prelicensed fonts available for @font-face, and a handful of sites such as FontSpring offer @font-face licensing as an addon for premium fonts.
Even with so many available options, finding fonts that are of a certain quality and allow @font-face use can be a challenge. Free fonts are an excellent resource as they often have flexible licenses allowing for private or commercial use. Separating the wheat from the chaff so to speak is difficult and time consuming to say the least, so we’ve done some digging for you.
Here are 10 great fonts ready for use in your designs, web sites, and PSD to HTML projects.
